“Every relationship is special and precious”

Hello fellow readers!

So today I’m here with the most awaited KDrama from my personal Watchlist:: ‘My Mister’. I still don’t know why MDL hasn’t given this the melodrama tag, ’cause it definitely is one. I loved the story, the vibe of the drama, it refreshed my mind even though it was slow and lengthy.

So, in today’s blog, I’ll be talking about the unique relationship between Park Dong-Hyun and Lee Ji-An.

MAJOR SPOILER ALERT!

Their relationship started from Saman E&C, when Ji An was hired under Dong Hoon, as a temporary worker. They were like any other boss and employee until they got involved in office politics and power misuse.

Dong Hoon was the manager of the Safety inspection team and Ji An was hired by him. When asked why he hired her, all he answered was Ji An’s hobby of running made her seem interesting. As a manager, Dong Hoon was compassionate and understanding towards his employees irrespective of their gender and grade. Whenever Ji An would come to the office hurt or tired, he asked her to take a leave and rest at home. But he was strict when anyone tried to cross their limits, like when Ji An was almost fired by Dong Hoon for kissing him.

Both of them lived in the same neighborhood, and they took the same subway from the office to their home. Initially, Dong Hoon didn’t notice her, but once he realized, every time while returning home he used to look around for her. Even when he saw her buying groceries at the store, he was curious as to where she lived.

From the moment Dong Hoon found out about her sick grandma, who was deaf and couldn’t move, Ji An took a soft corner in his heart. I doubt if any of my neighbors would do half as much as he did for Ji An’s grandma. I really really started adoring him after those piggyback ride scenes.

They never mentioned being friends, but from what all the two did for each other, they easily can be called close friends. Remember those restaurant scenes when Dong Hoon opened up about his midlife crisis, he never openly spoke about his wife’s affair but he was broken. Ji An could sense that, so she tried to give him company and let him vent out.

Despite their huge age gap these two connected somehow, as both hated to be under the spotlight, both had struggles in life which they had to overcome silently, also both had the thought process of old people (although Ji An was only 21). I figured that for her, Dong Hoon was an inspiring personality, she was motivated by him and wanted to be nice like him. She liked it when Dong Hoon appreciated her, a reference to the ‘You are nice’ recording.

Let me start with Ji An’s feeling for her ajushhi, which is pretty obvious to the audience. She has been tortured and has been struggling throughout her childhood, so when Dong Hoon came to her rescue all of a sudden, she was perplexed. Should I trust him and talk my heart out? Will he backstab me later? Is he really this genuine? But after Dong Hoon kept on proving to be the man he was, she couldn’t stop having feelings for him. Also, since she was hearing his conversations all the time, that aided in developing stronger feelings. Did she pity him? Yes, at the beginning and gradually she fell for his goodness.

I liked Ji An’s character, she was shady, did quite a few wrong things but she was honest from the heart. She didn’t like beating around the bush and was always straight to the point. The same way she showed her feelings for Dong Hoon as well when she confessed to him in the middle of the road. Although her intentions were different, every word she said was straight from her heart.

Dong Hoon on the other hand was a bit shy, overthought a lot, and hesitated immensely before saying anything. I’m guessing he didn’t even realize when he started liking her, or maybe he did but didn’t want to accept it. Obviously, he too had a soft corner, otherwise who goes out of his limits and hits strangers out of the blue. Since he was a practical guy, he knew that if let Ji An’s feelings wander for long, it would become difficult for both of them. Although in the drama they never showed his open confession or accepting to like her, I would still believe he did. Also, whenever Ji An was not at her supposed place, Dong Hoon was seen to be searching for her everywhere. Remember when she shifted her home without notifying anyone?

And man that hug made me cry again.. it was so touching.

I’m going to say it one more time! This drama has hit me differently, it’s been one of my most satisfying watches. Tbh I knew I would miss it, so I purposely took time in finishing it. The drama talks a lot about midlife crisis, I’ve 12 years more to reach that age range. But, if I ever get hit with it, I hope I’ll have some special people around me with whom I can share my thoughts and trust them to keep the secrecy.

For melodrama lovers, this drama is a 10/10 recommendation from me. But keep in mind it’s gonna take time to finish and is very slow at times.
