No. of episodes: 16 episodes (each 1 hour long)

The story starts with Cha Min’s (Ahn Hyo-seop) death by accident and two Grim Reaper (Seo In-guk and Jung So-min), who felt responsible for it, revived him with the help of Abyss. It is further revealed that Cha Min was cheated on by his girlfriend, who was on the run, so he wanted to track her down with the help of his best friend, Ko Se-yeon (Park Bo-young). But the next day, Se-yeon was found murdered, and on discovering this Min tried his best to revive her with the help of Abyss and was successful in doing so. Also, unknowingly he ended up reviving a serial killer, Oh Young-cheol (Lee Sung-jae), who was on the lookout by the police.

About Abyss

Grim Reapers and the Abyss

Abyss is like a marble stone, which revives a dead person in the form of its soul. So, every time a person is revived, their appearance can differ from what they looked before (like in the case of Min, Se-yeon , and Young-cheol). Also, there is a trick, for a revival to be successful, only the owner of Abyss and the dead person has to be present. In case, the owner of the Abyss dies, the next revived will become the temporary owner.

In-depth into the plot

As the story progresses, the audience gets further clarity on Young-cheol’s motive of becoming a serial killer, and the truth about his family is revealed. It is affirmed that Young-cheol had an accomplice who was helping him clean up the mess. Although Young-cheol was under arrest the Abyss remained with him and he was making plans to use it wrongfully. Se-yeon and Cha Min continue to look out for this accomplice, so they can finally punish everyone involved for Se-yeon’s death.

Se-yeon and Min looked good together but I always felt that something was missing in them as a couple. Even in the last couple of episodes, when their romantic scenes were shown, I felt it was unnecessary to drag it so much. Maybe, this happened because I was so much into the show for its mystery and suspense part and was curious to know how Oh Tae-jin will be punished.

About the characters

Cha Min

The story starts with Cha Min’s old self, who is shown as an emotional and not-so-good-looking CEO of Lan Cosmetics. He has been in love with his childhood friend for almost 20 years but it was only one-sided. So when a beautiful young lady approached him and showed him some love and appreciation, he fell for her badly and wanted to get married immediately. After he was revived by the Abyss, he turned into a strikingly handsome young man but all his inner emotions and values remained the same.

Ko Se-yeon

I preferred the newly revived Se-yeon played by Park Bo-young than the old one. The old character was kind of a bully to Cha Min, with not much appreciation for average looking people. The things which changed were mainly her looks, she now became an average looking woman but somehow appeared to be cuter and bolder than before. One of the things which did not change was, being a good prosecutor, who always fought for justice and truth.

Oh Young-cheol

He is one of the scariest villains I have seen in a K-drama. He doesn’t look scary, or creepy like other villains, he doesn’t have any scar on his face but the way he talks creeps me out. Young-cheol has a weird calm voice, he can even talk about murdering someone with a reasonable tone and a smile on his face. He is a selfish person, who kills people who do disrespect him or do not follow his orders. Being a doctor he believes that, since he has saved more people than he killed, so the world should be grateful to him. Young-cheol is the worst kind of husband and a father, who beats up his wife and takes advantage of his children’s weaknesses.

Oh Tae-jin (Kwon Soo-hyun)

This character was initially shown as a calm, sober, a professional public prosecutor who was a caring friend and responsible son. But as the plot deepened, he turned out to be an accomplice of Oh Young-cheol, who had murdered quite a few to hide the truth about his childhood. He had many similarities with Young-cheol, his calm nature, no regret for killing people, and immense hatred in his eyes. While watching the first few episodes, I had no idea that his personality will change like this in the end. This was a good character build-up by the director.

The best part of this series is, you are never bored. Right when you are about to lose interest, they will come up with a new twist or revelation. Abyss kept me on my toes the whole, that is why I love dramas of the mystery and thriller genre.
