Today I’m going to talk about the mini-drama ‘Part-time Idols’. Now coming to the concept of the name, it’s usually idol groups that are created with certain motives, like for a reality show, game show, survival show, etc.
So here the story goes like this, a famous producer comes back to the K-pop industry after 8years to make a co-ed K-pop group. He chooses the most underrated and unusual members of the company, who are almost termed as ‘hopeless’ cases in becoming idols. The 5episode drama then showcases their transformation and the obstacles they faced during that.

I’m starting with this not to discourage anyone to watch it but to share that this drama had so much potential with the plot and the characters, but they just didn’t think much about it.
The story was good, and the character development was good too but it all happened so fast that it seemed like the soon-to-be idols were just joking around about their fears and weaknesses. Stage fright is a huge issue in the real world when it comes to being idols, but it was resolved with just some fruit. Next was a member who could not sing high notes because of stress and worries, how was it fixed? — they made her scared so that she screamed and that’s how her notes got perfect.
Next is the acting, I don’t like the Producer’s acting, he seemed so fake and emotionless. His body was stiff, his eyes moved more than his body. Just to be sure of what a Producer in a k-pop industry does, they say they ensure the idols rise to fame and the whole journey is managed by the Producers along with the money. Now here this Producer had good contacts but no money, so I was a little skeptical of the role. He was more of a Talent manager than a producer.
The last point was making their first MV. The whole process looked pretty cool, with all the correct equipment, the whole mood was set, and the background artists were ready but then as usual came a major issue. My problem started from there, they still made the MV so I’m happy about that, but it looked quite silly. What it looked to me was that making such videos are very easy, you don’t need any skill in shooting them, not even a good camera or background. Apparently, this MV made by such amateurs became a hit with 5 million views….really??
The idol actors were good, they acted reasonably, they were talented (in real-life) and they gelled well with the roles. My favorite was the role played by Kwon Hyun-Bin, he was so natural and cool, he played a fool but he looked so good. So I don’t know what was the point of this drama, since YG ( YG Entertainment is the agency of Blackpink, Big Bang, G-Dragon, etc) made their actors only act in the drama, but for a person like me, I got to know more about the agency. So maybe that was the reason for the drama?
The ending was good, I could connect the beginning and the ending like the story came to a full circle and ended. It started with the Producer looking for talent for his new idol group and it ended with him again exploring different places in search of raw talent. This part of the show was touching, it showed the impact of the Producer in making a talented individual a star by believing in them, believing in their talent, and their dreams. They too have to face a lot to make it happen, but their names are not extremely popular among the fanbase like they support the stars from the background.
